Romig at Santa Fe Clay, August 2017

These photographs were taken by Romig's friend, Katherine Kagel. A Chef, potter and owner of Café Pasqual's, a Santa Fe, New Mexican restaurant of amazing creativity and longevity with real commitment to community and quality food.  Katherine asked if she might follow Romig through her process of making her "Herd". Together, they have produced a small book : Romig Streeter , An American Potter that we hope to have published early 2018.  It has already been something of an adventure for all of us !

A few of Romig's "Herd" with a wood-fired "Squid Plate" from Joy Brown's Anagama Kiln in Kent Connecticut

"The Herd" are a group of small cups that Romig has been working on for the past year. She has something like 600 of these little individuals. Different clays : porcelain, gritty stonewear. Some with a glaze: matte, high shine. Some without. All with gentle whites and beiges and celedons. Various types of firing. High fire, soda kiln, woodfired anagama.  These started out as Coracino/Limoncello cups but Romig uses them for green tea, black and white teas, Nolacino, expresso and even just water. The "Squid Plates" came along rather recently to accompany a few of her "Herd". They are all this dark black/brown clay of Joy's and they were all fired in the anagama. A yearly gathering of Romig's tribe of which she is kind of the matriarch.
